Install Ubuntu on MAC M1 Using UTM



As an enthusiastic IT enthusiast, the possibilities with UTM on my Mac Mini M1 are nothing short of thrilling! UTM unleashes the excitement of running various operating systems, sparking my curiosity to explore, test, and create isolated environments for learning and development. The flexibility to allocate resources, embrace cross-platform compatibility, and enable remote access is like unlocking a treasure trove of IT adventures. Whether I'm coding, experimenting, or simply diving into different OS landscapes.

 

Today we're going to diving in to installing Ubuntu on UTM.

 

Lets get into it!

 

Step 1: Get started by heading over to the UTM website at https://mac.getutm.app/ and download the UTM. It's the gateway to your Linux dreams!


 

 Step 2: Once the download is complete, install the DMG file. Your journey is about to take off!

 

 Step 3: Open UTM and prepare to Create a New Virtual Machine. Click Create a new virtual machine.

 


Step 4: Click on "Virtualize." This is where the magic begins!

 

 

Step 5: Select "Linux." The penguin power is at your fingertips!

 

 Step 6: Time to choose your ISO Image. If you're not sure where to find one, don't worry, we've got your back. Just click here: https://docs.getutm.app/guides/ubuntu/ or https://mac.getutm.app/gallery/ for some awesome options!

 

 Step 7: Leave the options blank and simply browse for your ISO image. Upload it, click "continue," and let the Linux adventure continue!

 

 Step 8: Customize your hardware settings. Be sure to follow the recommendation for an optimal experience!


 

 Step 9: Allocate at least 30 GB for storage. More space, more possibilities!

 

 Step 10: Stick with the default options for everything else. You're almost there!

 


 Step 11: Name your machine in the "Summary" section and hit save. It's time to make this Linux experience uniquely yours!

 

Step 12: Check out your screen. It's shaping up to be a real masterpiece!


 Step 13: Select "Try or install Ubuntu Server" and brace yourself for a few seconds until you reach the next screen.

 



 Step 15: Choose the best options that suit your needs. Feel the power of customization. You might see a proxy address prompt, but no worries, you can leave it blank.

 







 Step 16: Let the installation process begin. It's time for a bit of patience, but trust us, it's worth it! Soon, you'll see the "Reboot Now" option. The thrill is real!

 

 Step 17: Eject the ISO image  We're moving closer to the finish line!

 



 Step 18: Restart your machine, and watch as it tries to install and mount all the selected packages. The anticipation is building!

 

 Step 19: It's time to log into your account with your username and password. The Linux world is at your fingertips!


 

 Step 20: If you're eager to explore the desktop version, here's what you need to do:

 Type the following commands:

sudo apt install tasksel sudo tasksel install ubuntu-desktop 

 

 





 


This action will take 5 to 10 minutes, and then you'll need to close the window, reopen the VM, and wait for a few seconds. The fantastic Linux experience you've been waiting for is just around the corner!
